Fishing in Gatun Lake

Departing from Panama City at 6:30 am, take the road east for about 1 hour, then we will turn aside to the village of La Arenosa, arriving on the shores of Lake Gatun, this lake was created between 1907 and 1913 due to the construction of the Gatun Dam on the Chagres River. At the time of its establishment on Lake Gatun was the largest artificial lake in the world like his dam, which was a great work for the engineering of the time. 

Gatun Lake has an area of 425 square kilometers, and is located 26 meters above sea level. At the time of its creation many mountains became islands, where they currently host many native fauna and flora, highlighting the Barro Colorado Island, home of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. 

Once at the Lake Gatun we will be guided by "Chanito" in their used aluminum boats for fishing every day takes us to the best "spots" for us to achieve excellent; Tarpon (Sábalo Real), Snook (Róbalo), Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus), Vieja (tropical bluegill), Machaca (Sábalo Pipón), Jaguar Guapote (Rainbow Bass) and Peacock Bass or Sargento (Cichla Monoculus) who is the most common since it was introduced to control algae that grew in the lake as a result of flooding. 

After the fishing day, seeking refuge from the scorching sun of Panama in the house of our friend and his family Chanito where we prepare a delicious lunch of Fish with Plantain and a cold beer. 

Finished our lunch we returned to Panama at about 2:00 pm, tired, sunburned and satisfied by the best fishing on Lake Gatun.
